How to Have the Best Days in São Paulo, Brazil

Updated: Nov 7, 2023

I imagined many things this year, but going back to Brazil so soon was not one of them. This time, I had the opportunity to visit São Paulo, a city that had long been on my bucket list. Without planning it much, life did its its thing: one of my favorite singers - who doesn't tour much- was having a concert, and one of my very best friends had just moved to the city. Needless to say, she did not have to push very hard to convince me to pack up my things and head over there.

As soon as I set foot in São Paulo, I regretted not asking for more days off at work. The city immediately filled me with an energy I can't quite explain. If I had to choose one think I liked, I wouldn't know what to say. Because in my super short stay I loved everything I did and saw, even though every day was so different, and it does not hurt that Brazilians are nice and I have always felt drawn to their culture.

Unlike other trips in which I have done a ton of research, this time I tapped into the knowledge and hospitality of my friends, and this made the trip much enjoyable and unforgettable. So, here are my favorite ways to have a guaranteed fantastic time in São Paulo.

Explore the museums:

I highly recommend the Pinacoteca de São Paulo and the São Paulo Art Museum (MASP). The Pinacoteca is located in the city downtown. With its striking architecture, it features a collection of Brazilian art, and offers a journey through the country's cultural history. At my visit, we were surprised to fiEnd a temporary exhibit on Argentinian artist Marta Minujín, which consisted of immersive works, video installations, and photo performances. In the midst of the color and fun, I got to learn a lot about the artist and what she stood for. This was, undoubtedly, one of my favorite experiences.

The MASP is located in an iconic glass and concrete structure that displays architectural innovation, and provides a backdrop for its awe-inspiring collection. The latter features Western and Brazilian art, works by masters like Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, and Marie Laurencin. What sets this museum apart is its approach to exhibition design, with many of its pieces displayed in a floating fashion, inviting viewers to engage with art in a very unique way.

Take a stroll:

You know I love a good walking "candid"

- Ibirapuera Park could be compared, all things considered, to Central Park in New York. It has lush green spaces, lakes, and winding paths, offering a respite from the bustling city. It also boasts an array of museums, sculptures, and architectural marvels. It is the perfect place to take a stroll or have a picnicking by the water.

- Avenida Paulista stands as the beating heart of São Paulo. On Sundays, it's closed in order to host markets, where you are sure to find entrepreneurs selling a wide range for products, as well as music, drinks, etc. In short, the avenue serves reflects the city's diversity and creativity.

- Avenida Liberdade is a blend of heritage and modernity with a diverse array of shops, restaurants, and cultural events. It is definitely a must-visit destination in SP for those seeking a taste of both worlds. You can have authentic food at Momo Lamen and shop for Japanese snacks at any of the multiple stores.

- I also loved Oscar Freire, a street with elegant boutiques, charming cafes, and lush greenery. This tree-lined boulevard is a must-visit destination for those seeking a taste of São Paulo's cosmopolitan charm. As a fan of Brazilian fashion and style, visiting stores like Pat Bo and Melissa was a true delight.

Eat and Drink:

My friends say you can eat out every day in São Paulo without ever going to the same place twice, and I think that sounds right. During my stay, we went to a bunch of different restaurants and cafés, but these were my favorite spots:

- Mercearia Amauri: I would go back to this one many, many times. It is this beautiful corner house with relaxed decor but in very good taste. We went there for a late lunch and caipirinhas, and every single thing we tried was top notch. However, what I liked the most was the atmosphere, it felt relaxing, but energetic and very, very chic. Would 100% recommend.

- Quintal de Betty: This is the perfect place to have lunch on the weekends. You can't get wrong with their steak, beers, and delicious appetizers.

- Cafe Zinn: I can't rave about this café enough. Cafe Zinn is a popular spot in the Oscar Freire area, and I understand why: their delicious drinks (I highly recommend the frappezzin with salted caramel) can only be matched by its buzzing energy at all times. And, as a communications person, I have to say I loved their branding as well.

- Jardin at the Rosewood: Another place I would go back to always, is the new Rosewood hotel. While it has many bars, we sat at Jardim, which is tastefully hid in what feels like a city forest. It is the perfect place to settle down after a day of shopping/sightseeing and have delicious drinks in an elevated, upscale spot.

Check out other spots like:

- Nossa Senhora do Brasil - Church

- Hotel Unique - Rooftop bar

- Granado - Apothecary where you will find the best souvenirs

- Maria Brigadeiro - Brigadeiro store

And with that, I am concluding this post. I hope you like it as much as I loved this city <3
