Ever since I met my friend Geraldine back in 2018, I've heard wonderful things about Puerto Rico. It took her getting married earlier this April to finally bring me to the aptly named Isla del Encanto.
Upon my arrival, the air already felt light and joyful. My first impression was, of course, that there were many similarities with Latin America, with those sprinkles of the US. San Juan reminded me of cities I love, with an old city like Cartagena, forest-like flora right in front of the sea like Rio de Janeiro, uphill cobblestone streets like Lisbon, and the cold shade of leafy trees like those in Mexico City or São Paulo.
I was lucky enough to spend a week there in total disconnection from work or daily life, immersed in the joy of my friend's wedding, the exhilaration of spending time with old and new friends, the always delicious deep-fried food, and endless flow of cocktails.
So, without further ado, here are a few of my favorite things about PR:
The sea: I was impressed by the blue hue of the ocean in Puerto Rico. While I stayed around San Juan the whole time, I was mesmerized by the beauty of the water, which was thoughtfully highlighted by the surrounding constructions. For instance, the views from our AirBnB, the walls of Old San Juan, or the Condado Ocean Club were truly stunning.
The hotels: The hotels: We switched lodging a few times during our stay, always with great luck. My favorite was, hands down, the Hyatt Grand Reserve in Rio Grande, where we stayed for the wedding festivities. The beach was breathtaking, the rooms modern and beautiful, with incredible views, and the staff truly kind and accommodating. Some of the highlights for me were the breakfast buffet - including yucca fries, tamales, and a melange of tropical fruits - and the oceanfront room I scored on the first night there."
In addition, we spent a day at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel, which was stunning and the perfect plan for a relaxing day at the beach or pool. The food and cocktails were delicious, the amenities were beautiful, and the staff were also top-notch.
The PR way: I adored the personality and happy-go-lucky demeanor of Puerto Ricans. I enjoyed every interaction I had while on the island, as well as learning about their traditions. Some of the things I enjoyed the most were a plena performance at my friend's wedding featuring "cabezudos," costumes characterized by big masks and bodies. I also loved the sound of reggae ton everywhere, as well as hearing about everyone's encounters with Latino celebrities and their perceptions of them.
The food and drinks: Some of my highlights were the shrimp mofongo at Sazón, the grilled octopus and mahi-mahi at Princesa, the guava and cheese toast and aguacate relleno at Bistro Café, and the cocktails at La Factoría. Additionally, I adored sitting at Café Botánico, which not only was a gorgeous place but also had a fantastic matcha latte, and at Patio del Níspero, which reminded me so much of Cartagena and was the perfect place for lunch and a cold drink after hours of exploring Old San Juan.
The strolls: I have raved so much about Old San Juan, because it was my favorite area of the city. Like all good things, it simultaneously felt familiar and foreign, and I enjoyed wandering around two days in a row. Besides its architecture and charm, I loved el Morro, and the way the emerald and green waves clashed against the walls.
Casa Bacardi and the T-Mobile District: I enjoyed visiting these San Juan staples. At Casa Bacardi we took a tour and sipped on their signature rum. At the District, we walked around and had dinner at one of its many restaurants.
The crew: most importantly, this trip wouldn't has been as fantastic as it was had it not been for my friends. I am a firm believer that, with the right group, even the most mundane things can become an adventure. They made every day in Puerto Rico so special and gave me so many laughs and memories that I will never forget.
